Detectives baffled by disappearance of missing businessman Herman Rockefeller

THE distraught wife of a missing businessman broke down while appealing for the public's help in finding her husband.
She said it was out of character for her husband not to have arrived at their Malvern East home as planned after landing at Melbourne Airport after a four-day interstate business trip last Thursday night.
Police said Herman Rockefeller's disappearance had them baffled and did not make sense.
On his flight's arrival around 9pm, Mr Rockefeller collected his luggage and paid his parking fee. The last known sighting is believed to be security footage of Mr Rockefeller's elbow leaning out the window of his car, a 2007 Toyota Prius, registration number UUP 682, as he left the airport.
All police know is that he did not travel along the Tullamarine Freeway or use CityLink as his e-tag was not used.
''There is nothing to indicate he has been a victim of foul play,'' Detective Senior Constable Peter Towner said. ''He hasn't been involved in any accident, he hasn't had access to any of his bank accounts, his phone is not operating. He is healthy, [with] a family, he doesn't drink.''
Mrs Rockefeller said she had considered the possibility her husband was being held against his will.
‘‘I can’t speculate on anything but anything is possible. (Kidnap) is a possibility.’’
In raising the possibility of Mr Rockefeller was being detained unlawfully, she sought to clarify the family name.
‘‘I can tell you categorically we are not related to the American dynasty,’’ she said, adding it had been reported mistakenly some years ago and the falsehood had stuck.

THE couple accused of murdering Herman Rockefeller met the millionaire through an underground ''swingers'' network, police will allege.
It is believed that investigators have established Rockefeller attended the Hadfield home of Mario Schembri and Bernadette Denny voluntarily on January 21 and will claim he had arranged a sexual liaison.
...
An intensive investigation (has) uncovered a double life, with police tracing advertisements in swingers networks and magazines. Witnesses have come forward claiming that Rockefeller was a known participant in ''swinging'' activities.
The Sunday Age has confirmed that messages and calls relating to sexual liaisons made to a mobile number allegedly previously held by Rockefeller is also under police investigation.
Homicide detectives have recovered the records of the mobile phone, which was bought by a Sydney man 12 months ago. ''It's a lead we are pursuing,'' a police source said.
The Sydney man has revealed he is "dealing with police" regarding the phone, which had been owned by a man called Herman.
"Over the past 12 months I've had some calls and they've asked for Herman. They say they are responding to some ad that's been in a sex paper, sexy swinger kind of stuff,'' he said.
''I've chatted with them about it as I don't mind that sort of stuff,'' he said.

TWO people have appeared in court charged with the murder of missing millionaire Herman Rockefeller after an extensive search of bushland near Heathcote failed to find his body.
A 57-year-old Wallan man and a 41-year-old Hadfield woman were charged with Mr Rockefeller's murder at an out-of-sessions hearing at the St Kilda Road police complex late last night.
Police told the hearing Mario Schembri and Bernadette Denny had both made admissions to being involved in a physical altercation leading to Mr Rockefeller's death and of assisting in, or having knowledge of, the disposal of his body.

Herman Rockefeller's car has been found - but there's no sign of the missing businessman, police say.
In the first breakthrough in the four-day hunt for Mr Rockefeller, his car was found near an abandoned homestead off Ballan-Daylesford Rd, near Ballan, about 90 kilometres west of Melbourne, or about 45 minutes' drive from where he was last seen at Melbourne Airport.
The homestead is owned by a Ballan resident but hasn’t been used in years, said Lloyd Robertson, a co-owner of the nearby Crossroads Trading general store.
SES volunteers are carrying out line searches in grassland around the vehicle. Forensic detectives are examining the car, which appears undamaged.
